Here at Sail Cayman we have been in the tourism and watersports industry for decades. Neil Galway, owner and Captain started his tourism career as a windsurfing instructor and Orneil Galbraith, also a Sail Cayman Captain started as a beach attendant on Seven Mile Beach. Throughout our respective careers we have simply never grown tired of Stingray City. We just love Stingrays, we love feeling them against our legs, we love holding them, and feeding them and watching that forever smile shape of their mouths. Nothing beats the feeling of arriving at Stingray City early morning, with the sun high over the turquoise waters whilst watching the entire group of almost 100 rays gliding towards our boat. To us Stingray City is a little miracle of nature in Grand Cayman and we simply love to share the magic with as many folks as possible.
So how did it start? Well Stingrays love a good opportunity and nothing beats fish guts being thrown overboard by the fishermen of old. A free meal is always a good meal especially if you don’t have to work for it. Stingrays began gathering in the area decades ago when fisherman returning from an excursion, navigated behind the shallow protective reef into the sound, and cleaned their fish in the calm water of the shallows and sandbar area. The fish guts and squid were thrown overboard and the stingrays eventually congregated to feast on the discarded guts. Today there are two Stingray Cities as the fisherman used two areas to clean their catch. The area fondly known as Stingray City Deep at 12ft has become a much publicized dive site and is also ideal for the avid snorkeler. Stingray City Sandbar further to the east has by far the most Stingrays and is also only waist deep. On really shallow days we’ve even seen boaters put beach chairs out to relax on whilst sipping rum and puffing on a cigar whilst Stingrays cruise by!
Today you, our Sail Cayman guest, have the awesome opportunity to feed these friendly rays by hand. It is still one of our most requested destinations when we book charters and with good reason too!
So when you book your next trip and your excursions in the Cayman Islands, please make sure you include Stingray City, there’s simply no other place like it and Sail Cayman would love to share it with you and make it an awesome and lasting memory.
